COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Missouri Democratic Party is today criticizing Governor Eric Greitens for announcing his support of the GOP’s latest healthcare overhaul, which would increase costs for seniors and working families, slash Medicaid, and eliminate protections for Missourians who’ve been sick before and have a pre-existing health condition.
“If you’re a senior citizen, working Missourian, or have a pre-existing health condition — Eric Greitens has made it absolutely clear that he’ll use the governor’s mansion to take away your healthcare,” stated Missouri Democratic Party Chair Stephen Webber. “The last thing our working families can afford is more healthcare cuts. That’s exactly why Missouri Democrats are going to continue fighting to protect and expand healthcare for Missourians in every corner of our state.”
- According to a report from the Center for American Progress, under the GOP’s latest healthcare overhaul, “an individual with asthma would face a premium surcharge of $4,340. The surcharge for diabetes would be $5,600 per year…Insurers would charge about $17,320 more in premiums for pregnancy, $26,580 more for rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune disorders, and $142,650 more for patients with metastatic cancer.”
- Key health, seniors, and patient advocacy groups – now including the American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association – are warning against the latest attempt from Republicans to repeal healthcare, with even Republican governors from around the country joining in on the opposition.
- At the state-level, Eric Greitens has enacted harmful policies that increased prescription drug costs for over 60,000 seniors and eliminated vital in-home and nursing services for over 8,000 seniors and people with disabilities.
