In 1960, poverty in America was a staggering 22 percent with over 30 percent of seniors in that total. When Nixon took office in 1969, the rate was cut in half. Today only about 10 percent of the elderly live in poverty.
Bottom line: The War on Poverty worked.
The rate spiked back up to 15 percent during the Reagan years and dropped back down under Clinton. Now, sadly poverty is again over 16 percent in America.
